Date:2020-04-13
Place:

On April 13, a visiting team of Chinese medical experts has been giving tips to Philippine front-line medical workers on how to beat the coronavirus. The team of 12 doctors and nurses, visiting the Philippines in the first exchange of its kind between the two countries, urged their counterparts at hospitals on the front line of the fight against the virus to learn from their experiences in Wuhan, the early epicentre of the outbreak. The team, headed by Dr Weng Shangeng, vice-president of The First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University, visited Philippine General Hospital, Chinese General Hospital, Guangtan Hospital, Chongyang Hospital, San Lazaro Hospital, and the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine.

The usual 14-day quarantine period for foreign visitors was waived for them.Spokesmen for two of the hospitals said the Chinese team had imparted four key lessons.First, hospitals should limit the movements of front-line staff even when they were off-duty to avoid accidental infections; second, hospitals should segregate sections for Covid-19 cases and control the flow of human traffic to avoid cross-infection; third, mild cases, asymptomatic carriers and people exposed to confirmed carriers should be housed in dedicated facilities rather than home quarantined; fourth, the government needed to be aggressive in testing and contact tracing.
